Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) are emitted by any electronic gadget, as well as power lines and mobile phones, and are believed to cause a range of ailments from headaches, insomnia and fatigue to brain cancer, leukemia and a damaged immune system.

Even the Stewart Group, the independent expert group that investigated the hazards of mobile phones, concluded that they could cause "subtle biological effects" and suggested that children should be dissuaded from using them too much.

What better way of protecting yourself than to wear a pendant that somehow shields you against these malignant microwaves? Roger Coghill, a research biologist and director of Coghill Research Laboratories in Pontypool, south Wales, who has studied the effects of EMFs on humans, animals and plants for 20 years, estimates there are 54 devices, including pendants, available in Britain (most available over the internet) that claim to protect the user against harmful rays.

He is testing all these devices to see if they work. For each product, he isolates some white blood cells and exposes the cells to a mobile phone. He then places the product between the cells and the phone. "We wanted to see if there was any explanation for their mechanisms in terms of normal sciences. Usually there is some damage to the cells when they are exposed to a mobile phone. But if the device does what it claims, the cells shouldn't be damaged.

"We've done that for a dozen different products so far and some of the cells were definitely more viable. But on the whole we found there wasn't much evidence that these devices do any good. I don't think any of them are worth having compared with making short phone calls. The best protection is not to make long calls."

One pendant given Mr. Coghill's stamp of approval, however, is the Personal Harmoniser, the cheapest on the market. It looks like a double-spiraled copper coil and its manufacturer, the Plymouth-based Centre for Implosion Research, claims that when placed on the affected parts of the body (it doesn't have to be worn around the neck) it relieves pain and stimulates healing. The company also claims it reduces the effects of EMFs.

Properties of Metals

The harmonisers are all made of copper, and electroplated either with copper, silver or gold. According to Edgar Cayce and John Keely, different metals possess different etheric and esoteric properties, or vibrational frequencies. In readings by Edgar Cayce he referred to the use of the vibrations of gold and silver to bring about a harmonious coordination of the cerebro-spinal and sympathetic nerve systems. The following excerpts, from Dale Pond's "The Divine Triplet" illustrates the different vibrational properties of the various metals:

"Silver was known to the ancient Hebrews, Greeks and early Egyptian alchemists as a female element whose energy was closely related to the Moon. It is the best conductor of heat and electricity of all the metals. In the case of electricity conduction, silver appears to be almost superconductive to "transparent" to the current flow. When silver is made into a colloid solution it becomes the best bactericide and disinfectant ever known to medical science and is reported to be deadly against 650 varieties of germs, parasites, and bacteria."

"Gold is one of the first known of all metals. In Hindu doctrine, gold is the "mineral light." Our current word gold is derived from the Hebrew word zohov , which meant the color of fire, or from aor meaning light. The alchemists liken gold to the Sun and considered the metal as a male element. Gold is the image of solar light, and hence of the divine intelligence. Consequently, gold is symbolic of all that is superior. The Sun is the "greater light to rule the day" of Genesis. Gold is one of the least resistant to electrical flow and resists penetration by certain types of harmful radiation. Gold reflects all visible light frequencies. One of the properties of gold is its ability to amplify, encourage, stimulate or even energize a particular kind and range of vibrations. No other element or molecular compound has this quality."
